I have had a partly parallel experience - to some extent a public ‘shaming’ regarding legal matters and I know all that matters is the eventual inner ‘peace’ that may just be there one day. I can and have put myself in her almost certain ‘mindset’ recently meaning i know the feeling of total hollowness that drains all of life. I would wish nobody suffers that permanently. Having thoughtfully pondered the ‘moral’ issues around these books I know I have the only conceivable medium-term key for you.
All words here are to my only personal inner moral-compass standard which are that I am accountable for every word I ever utter (for 22 years) to my own extremely literate and ‘moral’ adult child –26 years old top UCL MA in human rights – if you listen to the end of the audio below i state that - you have my pledge in those words used.

And every word meant in good faith – i do NOT revel in anyone’s fall from grace. And incidentally for 10+ years from 2005 i acted as a lay legal to many parents (on their side when they can’t get lawyers or more often discover the lawyers are a disaster - people like me last resort) in terribly troubling life-changing child court cases and have seen it all and do not ‘judge’ - i am extremely sophisticated ‘morally’.
I care immensely for one principle above all within the series of events (into the writing of the first two books, and then last month) that I know i have internalised correctly from the time of the initial eviction (i can imagine full well having been through an ‘unjust’ one myself with 10 year old child in tow).
This one principle is one that in my own intellectual journey and also writing - pondering what Britain became over 15 years, I know full well is the most pernicious to our society (and childrens’ futures) which is the reason i have diverted my thoughts much of the last few weeks into pondering this puzzle.
That one fundamental principle is how so many (indeed the majority in society) for at least a decade either revel in or trade upon ‘victimhood’ that is to some extent artificial. I know it is the most psychologically pernicious trend in society. I can say this (even as a white man) due to the fact that by any reasonable objective measure I could claim ultra victimhood myself – of the worst and most mind-bodily destructive kind: twenty two years of the worst kind of loss-pain and total destruction of my soul (and in fact ONLY ‘identity’ as for 10 years she lived with me and was the only ‘centre’ of my life) via the worst of damaging behaviours towards my only beloved child - aimed at wiping me out. 99% of people would have been driven mad by what i have endured (i am psych expert and i refer to DSM criteria). I have not been even made partly mad, but more importantly though someone with absolutely nothing and no ‘life’ due my past, i have consistently said to myself and others and even written for a decade on various stream-of-consciousness very well read blog format thingummies... that i would not have one second of my own entirely tortuous existence any other way. I do know of what I am attempting to explain. It has defined my own life. Still does.
So, ‘false victimhood’ is the only bad act that must be addressed, and history will judge. Indeed history will use these books as exemplar. And thus to me there is a situation that is so important and i believe could be used for (societal) ‘good’. Quickly. Bite the bullet now and you could do some real good.
I am also something of an expert on the human body (in a non hypochondriac way) and in fact am 100% ‘with’ you regarding the way a period of crushing disabling illness (it doesn’t matter what was the ‘cause’ especially as many illnesses – or what the nett physical condition is in how one feels, can be multi causal) was certainly improved by extensive exertion outdoors. I have in fact been through that reality myself over a few years from 2015. (in other words i think it is unfair and needs addressing intelligently the notion you have been claiming sympathy via illness, but that’s subtler)
I always 100% act in total transparency. I will follow this with some email correspondence this week with Chloe of The Observer. I have steered her into what i full well know is a ‘proof’ of sorts of some real issues at root. If you can take my correspondence as a whole – with you here and her too, there is a far more nuanced fuller picture of what i know were other aspects of your life back then that in and of themselves aren’t really any ‘crime’ (I am in fact so on the side of the poor folk – even if they have their hand in the till, especially seeing even Wales become gentrified and those in the bottom 1/3 so so under financial pressure the last 15 years )
I have in my mind the only ‘solution’ for you that I stick at the end of this email but i would suggest it is the final part of all the communication - full disclosure being your only medium term hope. And then see if a genuinely useful (to society at large) final narrative could follow. I can help …

Sorry for typos i am 2 years largely walking, off grid - not ‘inspired’ by your material as i have been a therapeutic walker 15 years,, and laptop and phone charging limitations severely limit my editorial time
And the ‘tone’ of my public playful material is ‘gonzo’ - largely as artistic response to the so so many faux ‘spiritual’ people who colonised all my once sane rural wild-lands (and ALL of Cornwall where i have resided in a van 2 ½ years) …. It is NOT insulting indeed my loyalty IS above all to walkers – those who soulfully, maybe even meditatively, walk long journeys for whatever reason.
That - querulousness over the word ‘spiritual’ may be hard to internalise as it is ‘zealotry’ the way ‘spiritual’ became an excuse to ALL thoughtless behaviour or worse. Many years i had to live that as so many ‘spiritual’ incomers from down South overtook my residence from 30 years ago – in the Black Mountains above Hay-on-Wye (i believe in ‘something’ else, beyond scientific materialist, but don’t believe ANY human has ever come up with a description of anything metaphysical that can be believed thus i avoid all such label-words)
I now write up a few notes i have made over the last few days pondering this matter as a whole.
As i say (in the audio) the sleep and inner peace of anyone - YOU Raynor Winn, is the primary reason for this.
My motivation. I empathise – can ‘feel’ the draining hollowness of this new situation for you since early July. And the longterm inner psychological health of the children is also paramount. How this story (now there forever on Wikipedia) will sit with them, and even their own children in time.
Nobody in this confused (capitalist thoughtless) society deserves to be forever damned. Obvious exceptions and your bad acts aren’t anything Shipmanesque… i can ‘feel’ the lack of inner peace now. This may seem strange as i shall forward next my own efforts at guiding Chloe of The Observer. I did that as i know that unless ALL transgressions are fully out on the table no real peace will ever be found.
Of course with a chunk in the bank one could run away forever to Barbados (many moral runaways inhabit just such places – i know i was the Island pilot (island-hopping aircraft in the Caribbean) for a neighbouring Island in the 80s.. few such people even safely in the sun ever smile a real smile ever again. Or sleep a real sleep. Many rich runaways live in that part of the world.
I have extremely sharp ‘morality’ radar. And moral ‘credentials’ (and possible future assistant) – a new friend – many chats much deep correspondence over 2 years is a woman bishop (cancelled due some tweet) Jo Penberthy who we dined with a few weeks ago – i have known her 2 years – she is based in Cornwall.
And to really provide my starting point i am fully aware that the whole of awful Cornwall (i only came to live in 2 ½ years ago to attempt to marry a woman writer i knew here) is so utterly morally corrupt and sybarite i have no affinity TO this region (nor should anyone else) but i find the tale personally useful as I am still trying to nudge a beloved (who lives by Gweek – a maybe neighbour of yours) to leave as she in fact writes well about grown up matters but has great difficulty as an intellectual with the word ‘moral’. In a way this story i think sharpens ones focus upon what it is – she believes as I do in books, at least. But the word “moral” sticks in her gut (copying her fey effete neighbours – she is a European immigrant). The false victimhood that accompanies the narrative i know is a clearcut immoral act. Even she may agree….
Walking is my own ‘religion’ – walking and books. Good ones (i didn’t read the Salt Path no disrespect but i am a deep reader more inclined to Kushner or Cusk… ). And i have suffered a terrible grief - full bodily, five years, from 2010. Only walking became the real cure. If not for beginning then around 30-50 toughish hilly miles a week i would have been dead some years ago.
That said and behind my writing in here my ONLY purpose for 5 years has been to attempt to nudge women i know who have bees in their bonnet about contemporary society – from overthinking menopause, to the environment, to WRITE. I cajole, nudge, prod, them to write and even form a collective to morally support one another. But it has to be real. It has to be ‘get over yourself’. It has to be full real all-the-way disclosure. You would be invited.
And all this summer i have spent my time around one of these women (VERY good on the ‘morality’ of medicine - frontline stuff though unable to even write a paragraph until this summer – bit of a bootcamp via me – successful in a way) - who i could almost say has immersed herself in the ‘morality’ of the matters since the Observer piece* =see a crimes matrix below
All i care bout is writing about the ‘morality’ of contemporary society. For my daughter and also for the woman who lives in Gweek. In fact these events are certainly a gift in the latter situation in that as with many ex cosmopolitan sophisticates she finds the word ‘morality’ difficult – they are too ‘good’ for such a quaint old concept. I think now we can say there are some moral absolutes.

In fact myself i do not normally use that word, morality (precisely because of that – the new age, newspeak types find it too staid) i merely use the phrase “over the line” – we knew where ‘the line’ was decades ago – culture of the late 70s guided us beautifully on just that. There is no doubt (nor will there ever be) two of the four items in the book (see bottom of page) are over the line - even if inadvertently.
To have profited from them will always be seen as wrong. History will say so. Maybe even future writing courses and workshops. (even if you DO need to guide the narrative as people in our society are for years just so so stupid!) And in passing i know what the REAL ultimate ‘crime’ is - i mean in the longest run, that one of the books on the Times bestesellers of all time is now forever – and we know it will be forever, marked as containing deception ‘over the line’. When in fact it was a potentially useful ‘social history’ and comment upon society by a woman. I personally also find that sad as if you see my own messy booksite leftovers2022.blogspot.com i wrote some essays a year ago about how female literature is i think far more important than male.
And my own only daughter did wish to be a writer…still maybe will.
Indeed there is a personal ‘story’ in that one great close friend and others i have met on your path the last 2 years (i just walk sections back and forth – 3000+ miles in total) did have the book as semi ‘religious’.

Radio 4 a few years ago Start the Week writer Natasha Carthew stated this region she was born in, is (a theme park! – though she was wrong singling out the Falmouth region as it’s ALL of Cornwall much of Devon too)
Sat above the Helford, if you are (i have journalistic recordings – interviews with various who always say “ my ohh my what awful [sybarite] frauds live there..” once called the ‘River Rats’ - not complimentary) indeed the ‘over the line’ behaviour around a serious memoir to me is a gift – it actually cements every word i have said for 2 ½ years about this whole 100% dangerous theme park..
Of course this year also the ‘backdrop’ is the ‘morality’ of Gaza and Ukraine… Gweek airport – the largest helicopter base in Europe, will certainly have played some part in supporting the AWACS and special forces that are as we speak still acting as USA’s cheerleading lapdog…
Myself i have only one wish as stated above to have a genuine ‘union’ – collective, around writing about issues that have crippled ULK for some years and in fact the main one being ‘gender politics’ …(UK among other things the world centre of false allegations and damaging litigious behaviour)
If interested set up a trust. 100% transparent (i am the legal king of that word!) to support and publish such women as i have located - my best is a half Pakistani half German (Islam hater ) bought up London and the Italian alps – a true philosopher in every way..
Of course earnings from the book cannot be retained - or maybe ¼ at most. ¾ must go to the cause of truth. I …we..can assist. I have various women pretty much beyond suspicion – Penberthy (she suffered false allegations) and others who could run such a trust… (and our Oxford medical don a trustee)
In fact there is something TOO important (he could consult on – and we can recruit a very famous writer man who is his neighbour ) which is indeed GET MOVING if ill. I work on that myself. It is by far the most important aspect to the book - obvious, but now as the publishing world forever disown you i know it is STILL the overriding ‘moral’ good – in fact quite simply there will be people alive today who would have otherwise died by that embolism or whatever else had they not slung on their rucksack and done at least a part Raynor’nMoth – frankly that is the moral absolute in this matter i am quite sure even your own agents advisors will have lost sight of…. It also happens to be something for years i speak about with many … but not to contradict myself, the overall ‘sin’ is presently too overwhelming unless it can be turned around as a salutary tale of some sorts – to ALSO help others.
We have a parallel no matter what the deeper right or wrong in that in that my own ‘wrong’ (2003) nevertheless an overall culture of REAL ‘transparency’ in life-changing massive legal issues many thousand affected by yearly that is a genuine ‘good’. Nobody can take away such things over time.
Above all though hard to get into one email as i opened this false ‘victimhood’ (i am normally ruder “confected victimhood” “saccharine pity” etc) in fact is also a close cousin of false allegation. I do believe these are the very worst and most dangerous changes in British society the last few decades (leading partly to ‘woke’ which we all know caused a swing away from sane liberal principles into Trump and maybe soon farrage) and a worthwhile crusade is to somehow try and document or almost campaign out of the MISTAKE – i understand it is so common so in reality don’t see it as any worse ‘crime’ than the majority make day in and out.

there are 4 strands in the story. (i have read book 2 – most helpful in deeper dive into this) 1 = ‘injustice’ of losing the house. 2 being ‘homeless’. 3. A good long walk – appreciating nature and overcoming neuroses (most have – i was raised in Welsh hills as shepherd so don’t have them) about nature weather smells bugs etc….that journey is GREAT for the soul. 4. Physical exertion and LOTS of natural light for someone with a serious disabling health problem is ALWAYS good.
Items 1 + 2 drop them. There is NO way back into them. Items 3+4 to be FOREVER celebrated. If you can listen to the audio sent to Chloe in the email dated 16 aug you will hear a proper ‘way out’. AND with my walking buddy and a very close friend of hers (used to work together in hospitals for years) a world renowned medical research scientist and very senior Oxford don a ‘reasoning’ could be built around that matter – item 4….
Other associated matters: sorry the ‘NDA’ arrangement – looks so bad to any not very educated casual observer. It needs to be disowned. The ordinary person sees ‘gagging’ as automatic red flag. (i am a bit famous for challenging ‘gags’ in a test case so it is my subject..)
Lucky to have not been prosecuted (i would guess beyond it now) as in fact Welsh courts are SO SO stone age punitive that would have possibly been 2 years pokey
One absurdity (i see from many comments) is people ignorantly criticising – implying fraud, at ‘using false names’ - what a silly ignorant people – our greatest of writers George used hers as do many others..use pen names..
And finally, what solution - magnanimous, sane way forward is there – for Chloe as well in that I am not sure this is really good for her career (i am so pacifist pro Palestinian and Israeli life its daft so good writing on issues in islam is the real world, this may not really be so as no one realises how truly beyond hope Britain is DUE things i refer to above)
I know that the very best thing for society, journalism, and even the book world, would be a collaboration by the two ‘sides’ over time (i can be in the middle i have no enemies even others who have destroyed my own family over 22 years i would sit with: “NEW DAY!”)
A salutary tale. Sally and Moth are merely of millions – maybe even the majority now in the uk, who slipped into ‘confecting’ a not-really-true narrative of being victim. (on items 1+2 above ONLY). That to me would be the REALLY useful story. Crying ‘wolf’ or even false allegation – shifting blame to others, maliciously as some do, or even unconsciously in challenging periods i am sure the case here, is THE battle in this modern society. UNDERSTANDING how that comes to pass is key for society at large. Not damning the material as “fraud” as many will. In fact over time now most (especially those genuinely living for ‘truth’ via memoir story and even journalism) will have to write you off as totem. I myself know the real underlying societal psychological forces so widespread are far more interesting (maybe called Orwellian/ Kafkaesque) and i know do NO good for genuine ‘victims’ and the ‘minorities’. And ultimately I think that is a story that needs putting out with no ‘blame’. Best proof of that working WITH Chloe on any possible next phase. I have sat for long periods with those who admit their actions in real tragic crimes (upon real victims) . And similarly the 12 steps process regarding past addiction is all the same: understanding the course of events leading up to crisis, crime, or ‘crime’ merely by not doing the right thing at a cross roads, is known to be eventual salvation. This of course written in the year of Malkinson. There is a platform there that one day could be used to genuinely assist more of us. But it must be total. All the way. And eventually it does lead to genuine inner peace. And i know it is worth actually jumping off that cliff.

I am writing about your (welcome) Mr and mrs Walker pieces. I am an expert on certain aspects of law in the background (of their issues they played upon for memoir interest), extremely literary and with my partner we are big walkers. I think you (and all subsequent nipping at their heels by other media) may have missed something quite important that would bolster your case against them – i cannot see the books as anything other than joint. I know how books are written in the real world (when a close becoupling exists). In fact if you can bear with me attempting to highlight this issue for you, as money is clearly quite important to the Walkers – the background to their adventures and writing, the strategy they as a couple (as benefit and other law requires they are treated as a couple) employed to obtain financial subsistence ( expanded upon in the second book) surely gives the key in that their finances were unavoidably intertwined.
The suggested area of consideration is in an audio made yesterday for you here. I freely share this information. (clearly no anecdotal scandal from anyone with any personal axe to grind)

I shall briefly add to the audio here – context. I actually think this is an important cultural ‘moment’ and in fact I hope you can keep this moment fully alive and maybe even making some genuine difference. (not actually at her expense). In fact ultimately the whole matter i think worthy of a little book and even film. I am a lifelong student of genuinely intellectual exploration of who we are (or became – as a society).
I have only one religion: the great deep journalism and bookwriting of people like Pilger, Tariq Ali, George Elliot and Stendhal. And their few successors. I happen to have personally taken forward probably UK’s most important test case (2005-6) on the right of the citizen to tell their TRUE stories in the face of a creeping Stalinism in the public domain – where bureaucratic authority intersects with the common wo/man, , even then. I also owned for 5 years from 1997 a small bookshop in Hay-on-Wye. Selling only the greats of mainly European literature.
So why on earth waste one moment even writing this to you now on a not very good book (series) and whether or not there was any ‘artistic license’ stretching a few ‘facts’ about a bit of walking for ones health around a well trodden official pathway?
I think my audio also explains this, but what i haven’t emphasised or even much referred to is that for a few years (as a sort of wandering writerly part-hermit) I have also ‘lived’ on that path - though it has zero emotional resonance for me – we (joined by partner 3 months ago) merely walk to be healthy and to some extent keep aside from the rather sad ordinary people of this country, nevertheless one cannot be unaware of the book being almost ‘bible’ for many met here. In fact my partner i met a year ago. her on a walking holiday on that path she only here due the book.
What is interesting is that for many many people – thousands, it was a mother Theresa memoir – it stood in a saintly way above all the troubles of the rest of the world. And now… well, as we both are of the same sort of inner workings – rather sceptical of anything we are ‘told’ is wholesome in the uk (my partner 30 years a truly hardnosed NHS worker at the sharp end – blood and guts) it is, to quote Don Maclean “the day the music died”. Not for walkers (i have walked that path about 3000 miles the last few years) but almost sums up or is part of an orchestra piece which also features the loud drum-smash of Gaza still under a rain of lethal dynamite. And Ukraine still the killing fields… it was as if in all the mayhem Mrs Wynn stood pure and almost had the ‘answer’…. Until you proved rather well she was as hollow and over-sold as a pack of cheap ultraprocessed biscuits form the economy range of the local Lidl (the genuinely homeless may require as daily sustenance ).
I have followed Tortoise media (audios) the last few years as one of the very few sources of ok longform investigative journalism. I did in fact recently drop a long line in about what in a way is a related matter - in fact Mrs Walker’s ‘response’ beautifully echoed the ‘problem’. My past region – Hay, etc., this region – Cornwall i have lived (only writing) for 2 ½ years - Devon the same, has been totally overtaken with those who sell themselves (or rather camouflage the dastardly deeds many committed to afford the mover here) by calling their life/ snake oil sales business – in wellness etc., as ‘spirritual’. She got that word in to her initial rebuttal i saw almost out of their playbook. There is one. Hi, just a clarification in one benefit matter i didn’t emphasise enough….
… a tad gobsmacked to have even had an acknowledgement from a journalist! Great manners at last…(i used to write to many over the years – last 10 years ghosting is standard) . Well done …You put my lost faith back into a (“…the music died”) rather lost humanity.
I kind of live for some years ‘on the hoof’ – live totally off grid, and get a quick laptop charge once a day at church plug so i don’t have much digital time at all – i.e. all must be done super fast, no time to review …
So i thought i better relisten to what i sent to you, having had an acknowledgement it even got opened 😊 .
About 10 mins in to my audio i riff around the 4 aspects to state cash (dole/working tax cred/ sick pay/ council tax discount) but i didn’t emphasises the real world how in fact the TOTAL FIGURE - that which anyone under the earnings /assets cut-off amounts, is also made up of automatic housing payments.
I referred to it rather in passing whereas in fact it is the LARGER portion of total state aid available. ‘available’ the wrong word – everyone gets. In fact if you claim one part of it all and not the rest, they – the authorities, are seriously suspicious of you!
In other words someone or a couple goes along to the… (council/ citizens advice/ local ‘community hub’) and in this case says – and they will have! Her situation standard
“ one of us unemployed, one serious illness, no, we have no assets, what do we get?” what you ‘get’ is:
The various ‘benefits’ i mentioned.
PLUS a larger amount which is monthly housing benefit to pay for housing. In fact if you don’t have any savings at all and are seeking new accommodation when homeless (or sofa surfing) , you also !!automatically!! qualify for a loan scheme from the council to pay your deposit and first month rent - a standard countrywide system all councils provide. I can find the name of it …
And also you apply for the ‘social housing’ schemes – meaning Housing Association rentals (there being in reality no council houses) and with an illness in the family unit to the extent his will have seemed very serious on paper, you get priority treatment in the housing applications. They could have been housed that way fairly quickly. And also with ‘terminal’ illness would have i am sure quite easily got temporary b+b accommodation as a PRIORITY case.
(ALL of course assessed at each stage for actual entitlement - under earnings and assets thresholds!)
So in the real world, if a couple with all their background (except a genuine real asset worth more than £15k), went along to a council/ cit advice etc declaring themselves ‘homeless’ they end up with:
Her dole - 80ish /week.
His sick pay entitlement 80 ish
Various factoring is applied to come up with a reasonable sum a couple need to live on - the very basics coming up with a number say 150 ish a week as bare basics (exact figure from that time could be easily figured) PLUS if he were deemed to have an illness that is very disabling (e.g. requiring extra expenses – a warmer than average house, incontinence materials etc) you get an extra ‘enhanced’ figure. Say an extra £80ish a week. Plus any extras such as vouchers or some assistance buying motorised wheelchair.
Also she would have likely been able to claim ‘carers allowance’ – in other words someone very sick in the household requiring regular chicken soup in bed, meaning she can’t work much if at all, she essentially doesn’t have to claim dole, but would get 70ish a week carer allowance instead..
And a very considerable discount 80 maybe 90% on the household council tax
Then (in a separate, but 100% ‘parallel’ application to the council ) reasonable rent is paid by the council (‘housing benefit’) - lets say at that time around 150/week for some basic accommodation adequate for a couple.
So, the state aid that this standard unemployed/ill couple, get is somewhere between 1300ish to maybe 1700ish a month depending on his level of disability and also the cost of their rent (the rent figure is paid in full unless deemed extravagant meaning if local rent for a small flat is 600/mth on average and they rent something 800/mth then the council only pays the 600 – they have a chart).
I didn’t emphasise that it is a TOTAL monthly figure in reality, even if via two separate applications (DWP and council) – that are in effect one application, meaning all the council housing benefit forms and questions are posited on “do you both get income support [dole] / sick pay “? And if you tick those boxes for both of a couple then your application to ALSO get housing costs paid is pretty much automatic….
And if you aren’t claiming from BOTH entities then serious red flags go up.
Unless of course you have assets worth over the rough guide number of 15 grand…
(anyone will be told by the council / cit advice if they do then they wont get anything so don’t bother as she WILL have known well before they were made ‘homeless’)
So its all rather a SIMPLE matter though complex. Most people (i have been there myself – i had a chronic, likely dark mould induced, ill period 2015-17 necessarily claiming ESA - sick pay ) with nothing in savings just look at it all as one monthly figure – from 1000ish if single like i was per household, up to 1300ish if couple, maybe 1500ish or even 1700ish if a very ill person one of the couple.
Even if this was in the old system divided over two ‘separate’ applications – DWP and Council.
I think i also can do a really good guess at WHY even before the eviction they were tied into this version of their story. or this fork in the truth-pathway:
I would bet my bottom dollar that in the court proceedings prior to the bailiffs arriving, again there are forms and MEANS TESTINGS that again will have asked the question “do you have assets including abroad”
In fact in what was a civil matter in court leading up to bailiff day usually the litigant (or in reality ‘defendant’ ) is asked to state their means so that a judge can decide what costs to award against them (to their legal opponents) if they lose the case.
In other words (assumed! by me - but i know almost cert the pattern) at some stage they may have even applied for legal aid (for their legal case (s?) never mind filled in means testing forms handed to most litigants in civil matters in the court building and neglected to mention their foreign asset. In other words that first fraud (not filling in forms truthfully), maybe even perjury – if asked about other assets in a court!, once began they couldn’t turn back from.
I think that’s a pretty standard behaviour… the first key lie one cannot turn back from.
And essentially she cannot even do so now…
And again - i am pure journalistically and of course know what is ‘hearsay’ vs evidence, nevertheless there is a 100% standard mental process behind every person who goes to citizens advice asking what state help they can get if in these holes, and of course also has a cuppa with others claiming state aid (as we all do)
..if one has a legally traceable asset -a dollop somewhere…. Does one sell it – no matter what the ‘promise’ or rationale for retaining that asset in her case implied extremely important favour to family/friend… and then when that money has been used up and ones bank accounts have less than £15k ish savings, apply for all the normal benefits etc we sometimes have to resort to – 8 million households in UK.
And incidentally another standard, of course unprovable, matter: say hypothetically the foreign asset is worth 50k maybe more… sell it, and end up with (banked) cash, and it is quite easy to (if ever asked – unlikely) make up stories as to why that cash is gone…
“ we went to the casinos to try and double our cash but in fact lost most of it ..” or whatever, so …”now we have no cash savings at all left..we need to apply for [the standard dollop of monthly state aid] ” – and the various councils etc hate anything foreign. Whereas a deed may be traceable via public records, starting to poke into foreign bank accounts is where they draw the line necessarily.
Perhaps that makes it clearer. As i say i kindof care about this story - i just know it is a ‘real’ story of the UK behind all the increasingly false masks…. In fact although pretty bulletproof deep down it has struck at the soul of my partner woman - maybe even ex as she (as a mother of 2 kids 20 and 22) knows it shows up the 100% rot even in the walking ‘community’ on the lovely SW path… “who on earth can we EVER really trust? even Mother Theresa Winn, shown to be likely mentally ill and most dubious… ”
I mentioned in my first message i wrote to Winn towers suggesting how to do her PR – meaning ‘it’s over’, how can you possibly turn it around eventually?
(as a parent in fact, how does mum turn from being now very mudstained to eventually useful in society?)
I am sure there are other parallels but with clear writing eventually one could end up almost a Jonathan Aitken or even Nick Leeson last chapter – being useful to society via an honest eventual presence (in medialand).
In a certain way i have myself partly been on that journey (a few months in the slammer 2003 – never even a parking ticket prior that, arguably as a sort of ‘cause celebre’ having to plead guilty to a criminal matter – no lawyers able to even slightly coherently defend, but miraculously within a few months winning a court case to get child back, fully – no one ever manages that! Even if 6 years later, 2010, my one beloved child and all my life! she is quite unlawfully stolen for good…100% ruining my life forever ). I mention that only because there are some, maybe many of us - life’s losers when it comes to the luck stakes – who have reeled for years in agony – as i did in full grief for 5 years 2010-15, for whom ‘truth’ really IS important …
Anyway that is maybe hard to explain or attempt to put into words, but it really is a ‘moment’ if you ask me – like when Shannon Matthews mum, Karen. was found to have been lying to the cameras … “what on EARTH is our society!!?...woe is us” surely a historical ‘national’ moment ….i read Proust Tolstoy Kafka and all those philosophical big knobs … i think the Walkers are in the same category..if someone can write well what has ‘happened’.
Especially in a society so so many young people are suffering terrible mental health (often caused by confusion as to who they are deep down, and what our society is behind the spin)

A positive communication that may assist. Though you will have to take a big deep breath and let the nuance blow in through your blown-open French windows… whether the home there was habitable or not.
I am rather good at real PR. For a few months in the mid 00s i was someone who had a rather public period in the stocks (see my website below) , yet within only a few months i was doing national tv in a quite positive way assisting many parents especially, and ordinary people too, understand a rather Stalinist justice system. I also won a very prominent child custody case (when no one with criminal matters in their recent past EVER sees their child again). And then a few years later this was turned by me alone into arguably the most important ‘test case’ on civil law this century.
I am a very literary and philosophical person who even had 25 years ago a bookshop in Hay-on-Wye. I was raised in quite hilly, remote, N Wales so do have true affinity with anyone out of that region though I understand Raynor to be from the Lowlands to the East. I dislike bad PR for N Wales.
Above all i am a walker. I am also with, for some months, a woman who is revving herself up to be a writer (and has national periodical promise of publishing). She came to Cornwall where we both are living at present on the back of the now infamous book. As I value her, i am ‘loyal’ to that book which brought her into my own orbit.
Now, i understand how REAL PR works. And we both know that the way the cognoscenti have jumped on her after the Observer piece, means that’s it…game over.
What in fact medium term I think is more germane is that I know walkers. In fact it is pretty evident in the comments that now litter the various youtube videos featuring her PR appearances over the last few years, that she will never be forgiven. There is a kind of ‘purity’ in the psyche of those of us whom walk a lot. She has let them down personally. She was their Mother Theresa. 90% of those on the Path are women. I know i live by it 2 years. English women never ever forgive.
Unless…. I shall come to a little later.
I mention my own companion as in fact she may be very useful to you. She is a 30 year NHS staffer at the front line of serious illness. Often in the theatres where the meat cleavers are wielded.
She happens to be writing - before your debacle hit the presses, ABOUT the complete and utter craven patient-lead, blind certainty people wrongly hold in ‘health’ provision. And of course part of that is ‘diagnosis’: far far more a greyzone than the public can ever nowadays seem to allow themselves to internalise. Diagnoses, medicine, labels, conditions, became a religion. She writes from exasperation.
In short, obviously i refer to the notion that a condition may have been exaggerated for attention seeking purposes. We already have your PR get-out of that accusation. (can be written up in 10 minutes, WITH AUTHORITY) And that no so called mainstream journalist has allowed for this is both of our own crusade. Mine many years.
In fact for decades a serious intellectual pursuit of my own has been the atrocious communication of science (and medicine etc) by the journalistic/ writerly classes. Last night we dined with a top Oxford uni science researcher. He would chime, too.
I return to my own unique expertise: how to handle the seemingly incongruous ‘morality’?
I have been thinking about any possible ‘good’ story that could be hewn out of the cliff face, the edge of which she went and toppled over. And i do have something for you. For free. In fact all I seek deep down is that my writer companion - new to writing and a little naïve, sees how a story can be perhaps re-emphasised to suit a wider good.

Sorry i kindof omit what i know full well to be the absolutely standard ‘real world’ thought processes involved whilst potentially claiming state aid. They will have gone through just as EVERYone else.
Legally, a supposition of course, but i know full well a standard mental journey
Plenty of people run out of money and work (or even ability to work due ill health) and have some grey areas in their (claiming) life…
e.g. the person who is ‘single’ (legally for the claim) who may in fact have a longterm partner living in another house nearby officially, who maybe owns that house or who has assets or savings, such that if they lived together under one roof the claim of the ‘single’ applicant would be disallowed. The claimant sort of muddles through in a world of part-truth via their claim forms.It is common, and I have known closely one longterm couple doing just that though in fact both independently qualified for full state aid. In short they got two flats and two full sets of benefit paid for despite being a couple. (they would rather obfuscate narrative in any chat – as my neighbours: any mentioning of whether or not they shared bedrooms and which of the two was the more regular joint bedroom). Or the person on benefits and not declaring a day or two (longterm) working cash in hand at a local chippy to top-up.
Sometimes it seems the state accepts that the basic benefit pot is inadequate and doesn’t mind one managing to top up with a bit on the side… almost a lesser ‘crime’ in fact myself, i kindof think ok… though haven’t done it myself. And most claims for state cash have some minor omission or massaging of the facts. We all know this… it seems nowadays the state does too.
But its pretty obvious to me what their thought processes were – even if its hers (due her past).
As it seems there is no actual rebuttal of the ‘embezzlement’ - in fact almost tacitly admitted by not refuting!, and a bit of a ‘story’ as to the property in France they ‘had to’ buy – to protect adjoining property, what is missing is where did the house purchase cash come from? (i am sure you pondered but let me tell you real world thought processes)
A fair conclusion – i know what it is like to live on nothing for years! especially as the holiday rental operation wouldn’t have given them much (wales weather even in summer in reality precludes) is that the stolen money over the years became a little bundle of dosh that was used to buy a (semi) ‘secret’ little plot in France.
So as soon as the first hand in the till happens (15 or 20 years ago? – it pains me to even think of her never mind reread articles ) a ‘criminal’ psychopathology sets in. The Rubicon is crossed. And in her case compounded by the unusual (verging on ‘mentally ill’) inability to accept her family couldn’t inherit medium term ‘rights’ to tenanted land (book 2) . The bundle of nicked cash becomes a little atom bomb under her bed. She is too frightened of to chuck away if for periods did have a conscience, but at the same time it is her ‘birthright’, almost.
So, having turned down that pathway the sick person – criminally so, cannot turn back. She has so much – years of criminal pilfering, invested in that journey. It became her norm. (and of course ‘denial’ sets in - so much easier when ‘normal’ life is diverted into the worry over Mr walkers terminal matters)
And for someone with such a toxic irradiating lump of difficulty under her (metaphorical) bed, it is a fairly minor matter (mentally) to stick in a book - some of course of her offering is really quite ok “we went on a big walk without much grub, one of us pretty ill.. we marched on in his case limped but my ohh my it was a great thing once we got going…” is indeed a quite interesting ‘story’… quite pure almost... real.... but so easy to add in the word “homeless” just to spice it up a bit - shortcut words to find affinity with simpler people (Corrwall is VERY ostentatious in parts - millionaires houses with sea views) ; when deep down in the rational brain i am quite sure she will have been aware of benefit money available etc etc if the land bought with the toxic glowing little parcel of cash … wasn’t there.
But it is and furthermore is ‘rightfully’ hers as her mother had even told her (book 2) words to the effect “you are nothing without land” (its in italics!)… and deep down she felt cheated. In a way she had been on a kind of pilgrimage (stealing) to right historical wrongs… inconvenient that her successful little pilfering phase negated the benefit claims otherwise they may have been entitled to later on (like friends and neighbours she would have known to be claiming manage to get to tide them over – MANY do in impoverished rural places!!)
… to be fair, such a small detail really to use as a story line in a book. One that of course she wouldn’t have had much hope in her soul would be even read by a few hundred people if she ever got it out … and also it’s also easy to call oneself ‘homeless’ once one realises one can survive in a tent even in lousy weather. All that is almost ordinary ‘natural’ stretching of the truth many of us do.
Sadly (for her) i do think the real clues are in book 2, of yes, a bit of a ‘serial killer’ mentality almost - there is no attempt in book 2 to cover ones tracks or backpeddle a bit… (from “we were homeless/ penniless ..” and though never said, i guess “not one thing left to sell in the world to pay for our next meal”)
In other words, yes, also, according to book 2, got away with the lie once – before the book was even published – telling GENUINELY homeless folk who have NO assets at all in the whole world, one is ‘homeless’, the next lie in the serial killer trajectory becomes easier or maybe automatic…
(poor woman i know needs help ohh well..)
What an interesting but sad can of worms you went and wrote up. I am your side as from years of doing family justice cases from the ‘inside’ ohh my ohh my i know that such psychopathologies are almost the norm in our utterly lost society… and very dangerous.
But to me truth (even if i never have even read a ‘true crime’ book) is the only way we can genuinely fix societal malaise, acedia, sickness…

Subject: 90% walkers on SW path FEMALE (i know for fact) - the real sin letting them down
The real ‘sin’. You won’t know. Few do. The SW Coastal path is in fact walked 90% - 80% at the very least by women. Many walk alone. The average they do is 2 week ‘sections’ of the path – they will do the whole 600 miles over a couple of holidays.
I know this as i have lived (only) in a small van pretty much right on the SW path for 2 ½ years in various locations right on the coast - within 10 m of the path usually. . Mainly walking myself and meeting many walkers on the route in various places – by Lands End, on The Eastern coast in remoter spots the last 9 months (the very quietest most remote area ) and other places in between ... I also looked after a camp site right ON the path last summer. most of my visitors were on the walk.
In fact this is the real sin to me pondering the ‘issues’. Because yes the great majority of walkers – women, and in fact i would even say not far off half are walking alone – and ‘wild’ camping out alone , not only have read the book, but they are almost always writing diaries as they go, pondering life, their values - many are in fact at a ‘transition’ point in life – its remarkable the amount of women who are taking time out from their lives back in some city because a marriage is waning. In fact i met my own recent partner in exactly those circs - hers... .
But one and all really are on a pretty emotional values-driven odyssey. I have talked with hundreds over my last years. And always i am thrilled by and bolster the solo walking women (sorry if that sounds patronising / sexist but its SUCH a wonderful change over our lifetimes – late 70s when i began walking the Welsh hills as a teen one would never see any woman alone there…blahh blahh…)
THE thing above all – and for 22 years myself i think and sometimes attempt to write about (and continually debate) is ‘gender politics’, is how yes via the dodgy books she was their mentor. She was the one who ‘saved’ him via her backbone and resilience. Her values system. That is the ‘story’ they - her readers, take with them.
And that is the real damage done. Of course (last 10ish years post metoo etc) women being free to be their own person (very much seen ON this path) is a wonderful thing and it is now sullied. A kind of pure ‘freedom’ was what the book represented to them.
And incidentally as it is 80% + females (they literally keep some of the shops and campsites alive !), almost one and all on a very delicate emotional odyssey, the bad press - bad taste in mouth, will now decimate the walking tourism in the whole region.
I listened to the Observer interview yesterday on youtube and i think the ‘problem’ you have is that its almost quite funny how the almost entirely female audience (but by their pallor, city folk) is baying for her blood due some literary fraud almost as parlour game, but by definition they wont know that the real fraud – albeit partial, as clearly they did a few hundred miles, is that to us walkers HONOUR is the one thing we have. It is what contemplative walking is FOR. Internally processing our lives and figuring our values.
I shall entertain you with a little real-life (frankly the odyssey lot never impressed me as anyway they are artificial! Pious and dull….so so EARNEST!!) with my own buddy we spent this summer from May (only) walking the famous path but in fact most days (an incredible sunny summer) stopping for picnic and then outdoor passion … . dozens of spots tried out on her sacred pathway. And we would say “ why hasn’t the book got any Pathway bonking in it.. its been a great aphrodisiac for us… typic dull English bullshit of a book… ” and then also said runaway i have successfully encouraged her to read GOOD books – Russian novels, even Stendhal (greater than Dickens) and ponder her own values…
Anyway i am deadly serious even if this (in this email) story wont get written just how she has in a way let down many thousands of women (only) who specifically come to this pathway every year because she ‘licensed’ them to get into nature, and seek peace and centredness here. As a metropolitan sophisticate you probably wouldn’t even get what i have written but i myself have spent fifteen years walking off a true grief - true evil done…. I know what i am talking about. I know full well if i were a woman perhaps at some tough crossroads in my life, found my way here (alone as many are), felt that i had partly ‘processed’ my inner angst or grief or even of course getting over abuse or the like, and then seen its all partly built on fraud (i DO think the false victimhood is the true fraud) i would be VERY gutted inside…. It would devalue my own journey … as i say many are here doing this walk in a fairly fragile state behind (or afront) their backpacks

I think it is reasonable to say that a book – series of 3 actually and the first on the top 100 bestseller books of all time, being discovered to be genuinely problematical (she didn’t deny stealing many thousands of quid, and did falsely claim victimhood), is a historically significant ‘moment. I personally don’t care as the UK long ago knew was rotten in every way. But i think it should be noted. (for you both) And her response (being caught out) that somehow her "spiritual" journey gives her an excuse for sad deception, is important.... seems all UK middle classes especially in Cornwall think the same - 'spirituality' is better than just plain old right and wrong...
There is no ‘post truth’ or ‘postmodern’ anything, i think poor Mrs Raynor Wynn’s treatment (destroyed by press and public comment) has shown now… ultimately people know what is fair and what is rather sick cheating. (or just ‘moral’)
I have the last week been inputting into The Observer regarding the Salt Path scandal. On the basic morality of falsely claiming financial distress and ‘homelessness’. And attempting to map out her mindset - in fact for the BENEFIT of the shamed writer. The journalist thanked me. (they usually ignore you).

And yes there are SOME ‘acts’ we may be forced to commit that are ‘immoral’ …but sometimes a higher matrix trumps..
If you E refer to the book Flights of Love by Schlink (highly respected) he had a father character whipping away his young child when that child’s future was under threat… UK was the threat (we had agreed NOT to live here at your birth) then the acts of others in 2002… i have a clear conscience.
